The Gatlin Brothers

 Saturday, November 11th, 2023 :: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
 Barnhill Center at Historic Simon Theatre
 Event Details

This world-famous group of siblings, Larry, Steve and Rudy Gatlin, are returning to The Barnhill Center (TBC) for the third time. They are still one of the most requested acts from our patrons.
“The Gatlin Brothers were raised by a Marine and their patriotism is on display at all times,” said Sharon Brass, TBC producer. “Their concerts always include a few patriotic songs in addition to their big hits. So they were top-of-mind when we booked this show on Veterans Day.”
“But they don’t just sing the songs – they also support our miliary. They have proudly performed for U.S. Troops in Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Germany and military bases across the U.S.”
Originally from West Texas, The Gatlins began performing together as children in church and several local television shows. Then Larry, who was the eldest, headed off to the University of Houston on a football scholarship. His degree in English became a huge benefit to his already-prolific song writing.
After Steve and Rudy;s college years, the three brothers reunited in Nashville and recorded their debut album, “The Pilgrim.” At this point, some of Larry’s original songs were being recorded by other Nashville stars.
It was their third album, in early 1976, that put The Gatlin Brothers at the top of the charts with its single, “Broken Lady.” This song won them a Grammy for Best Country Song.
That was the same year the Gatlins were inducted into the Grand Ole Opry.
Throughout the ’80s, the Gatlin Brothers released 15 Top 40 hits, including “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer to You),” “Denver,” “The Lady Takes the Cowboy Everytime,” and “She Used to Be Somebody’s Baby.”
In 1991, the group decided to retire. The following year. Larry appeared in the lead role of the Broadway musical “The Will Rogers Follies,” while Steve recorded an inspirational album and Rudy opened two Gatlin Brothers Music City Grilles.
In 1993, the group opened their own theater in Branson, Missouri, where they began performing regularly; they also sang frequently in Las Vegas.
In the early 2000’s the brothers went back on the road for selective dates and enjoyed touring again. In 2008, they recorded their first album in nearly two decades, “Pilgrimage.”
In 2015 the brothers celebrated 60 years of making music together and released a new album, “The Gospel According to Gatlin.”
Throughout their career they have accumulated seven #1 Singles, 32 Top 40 Records, 22 studio albums and five BMI “Million-Air” Awards.
Their accolades include three ACM awards for Single of the Year, Album of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year for Larry. The group also received five nominations for CMA Vocal Group of the Year, Single Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.
The Gatlin Brothers have entertained on some of the world’s most iconic stages including the Grammy Awards, the American Music Awards, the People’s Choice Awards, the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Oprah, Hee Haw, Love Boat, the Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack, the Merv Griffin Show, Solid Gold, the Barbara Mandrell Show and their own variety special on ABC – “Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers”.
They have performed at the White House, the President Reagan Library, Air Force One, Ford’s Theater, Camp David, President Bush’s 80th Birthday Party, The Lincoln Theater, Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, West Point, Dollywood, The Mall in Washington D.C. for July 4th, the Greek Theater, Billy Bob’s, Radio City Music Hall, Disney World and Wembley Music Festival.
With the most self-penned Top 40 Billboard hits, Larry is known as one of the top songwriters of all time. Songs from his massive catalog have been recorded by Elvis Presley, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Glen Campbell, Kris Kristofferson, Sir Tom Jones, Dottie West, Charlie Rich, Johnny Mathis and dozens of others.

Brass Transit

 Friday, October 20th, 2023 :: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
 Barnhill Center at Historic Simon Theatre
 Event Details

This is a dynamic, crowd-pleasing powerhouse, and the world’s foremost tribute to the multi-platinum songbook of Chicago.
“Brass Transit goes far beyond just replicating the songs,” said Sharon Brass, The Barnhill Center producer. “They embody Chicago’s music in every detail, which is a difficult feat on such complex arrangements.”
You’ll hear all the big Chicago hits including “Saturday In The Park,” “If You Leave Me Now,” “(I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,” and “Just You And Me.”
Chicago was formed in 1967 and became in instant hit in America’s Pop and Rock culture. They were unique as the first band to incorporate a big-band sound into Rock ‘n Roll music, using a strong horn ensemble. They became one of America’s most successful musical groups, releasing 38 albums and selling over 100 million records.
Brass Transit was formed in 2008 by a group of eight accomplished award-winning artists, one of whom is part of the original Chicago band that still performs.
Since then, Brass Transit has steadily toured North America, dazzling audiences with their flawless performances. Most often, they play to large crowds and sometimes accompanied by symphonies and orchestras.
Their popularity is demonstrated by their busy tour schedule. Brass Transit is in demand for concert appearances equally as much as the original Chicago,
They recently produced their first (self-titled) album that includes hits by other top Rock artists, with horns in the Chicago style. The result is a delightfully fresh attitude on songs by Rare Earth, The Guess Who, Jackson Browne, Skylark, Gino Vannelli and Todd Rundgren.

Jomo & The Possum Posse

 Saturday, October 7th, 2023 :: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
 Barnhill Center at Historic Simon Theatre
 Event Details

Jomo and the Possum Posse entertain with a mix of Country/Roots, Honky Tonk and Rock ‘n Roll – all with a humorous Americana flavor.

These Austin-based musicians/comedians are known for their unique brand of original musical storytelling. Each song tells a story, and most are funny stories.

“You are in for a good time!” said Sharon Brass, The Barnhill Center producer. “These guys could easily be direct descendants of Ray Stevens or Roger Miller, with a touch of Lyle Lovett built in.

“Their lyrics and onstage antics are hilarious, and their musical talent is spot-on. The only trouble is that some of their songs get stuck in your head.”

The band is led by Jomo Edwards from West Texas, and his award-wining lyrics tend to skate the line between the cynical and the arcane.

Some of their song titles give you the picture: “Battered Husband Blues,” “Annie Is A Chicken Now,” “High Grounds Coffee Shop,” and “The Real Housewives of the West of Us,” are just a few.

The four-piece ensemble includes upright base, fiddle, guitars and sometimes drums or even a washboard.

They have released three studio albums, the most recent was in 2019 and entitled, “Take a Number, Satan.” The album has received excellent reviews.

In 2020, the band was selected “Best of Fest” for the third year in a row at Austin’s annual FronteraFest.

In 2021, Jomo took home the 1st Place award in the annual MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest in the “General” category.

Jomo & The Possum Posse have performed several times on NBC’s Texas Music Scene hosted by Jack Ingram and produced by Ray Benson.

However, the band is best known for their wildly popular viral video series, “Guy On A Buffalo,” seen on YouTube. The project was started simply to generate interest in their music and to finance a record. It quickly became a must-see series of videos with over 3 million viewers.

Seth James

 Saturday, September 2nd, 2023 :: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
 Barnhill Center at Historic Simon Theatre
 Event Details

Could a working cowboy from deep West Texas really be a rock-and-soul roots funk master, educated by the blues? The answer is embodied in singer, songwriter, and guitarist Seth James.

“When you see Seth, with his cowboy hat and boots, you expect music like you’d get from George Strait,” said Sharon Brass, The Barnhill Center producer. “But Seth delivers a soul, R&B and blues sound that is more reminiscent of Texan Delbert McClinton.”

His shows often include up to 10 additional musicians to accompany him instrumentally and vocally. His own signature guitar playing stands out among the best in the industry.

James grew up on his family’s ranch in King County, so he wasn’t inundated with pop and country music like other 90’s teenagers. He was isolated and, if he wanted music, he had to dig. “There’s not a radio on a horse,” James said with a laugh.

He found Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Booker T at an early age, and that music moved him. He studied Delbert McClinton who later became his friend and mentor – the two blues artists have toured and written songs together.

Both James and McClinton grew up close to Lyle Lovett and Lee Roy Parnell. These relationships helped James understand that someone with ranching roots could actually do something other than country music.

Once James found a sound entirely his own, he quickly became a noted performer. His songwriting skills were honed by years of professional writing for Warner Chappell Music where he collaborated with Chris Stapleton, Delbert McClinton and other greats.

With a collection of original songs, James emerged on the Texas music scene as a solo artist in 2009 with the release of his first album, “That Kind Of Man.”

In 2010 he formed The Departed band with his friend Cody Canada and other renowned artists. In 2011 they put out their first album together, “This Is Indian Land.”

The Departed released their second album in 2012 entitled “Adventüs” that included numerous songs written and primarily sung by Seth James.

Both of these albums landed in the top 20 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart, and the band became known as one of the premier acts of the Texas/Red Dirt scene.

Three years later, James left The Departed, simply because he missed playing his own sound he’d worked so hard to find.

In total, James has released three solo albums with his own band. The most recent, entitled “Different Hats” in 2021, features guest artist Lee Roy Parnell who still performs with James quite often. The album has been critically acclaimed for its masterful storytelling with irresistible funky groves.
