The Smithsonian Exhibit

In 1900, almost 40% of Americans lived in rural areas, while today, that number is less than 20%. Almost 90% of the land mass is considered non-urban. Join us in Brenham December 7 – January 19 to explore the Smithsonian exhibit titled Crossroads: Change in Rural America, and learn why revitalizing rural places matters now, and into the future. Despite demographic changes, economic innovation and a focus on cultural facets have helped make small towns unique, comfortable and desirable. Come and learn how these changes helped Brenham and Washington County create a bright future from the legacy of our rural roots.

Crossroads Speaker Series: Walter Buenger, PhD

Please join us at the Brenham Heritage Museum Bus Depot and Gallery on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 from 5:30-6:30 pm for a fascinating lecture by Walter Buenger, Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin. The topic of his discussion will be: “German Experience in Washington County.”

Buenger has written or co-written four books, co-edited three more, and authored numerous articles and book chapters. His main areas of interest have been the connections between Texas and the South, Texas identity, historiography, the role of memory, the influence of borders, and the construction and evolution of culture in the Southwest. He recently published a co-edited and extensively annotated version of the autobiography of William A. Trenckmann, a German language newspaperman and politician who was born in Texas in 1859 and died in Austin in 1935. He is also writing a re-conceptualization of Texas and the Southwest with the tentative title, “Texas Since 1810: Border Crossings and Shifting Identities over Time.”

Seating is limited so please RSVP to: admin@brenhamheritagemuseum.org. Admission is FREE for museum members and $5 for non-members. This presentation will take place at the BHM Bus Depot and Gallery at 313 East Alamo Street in Downtown Brenham, Texas. This program is in conjunction with the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street Program to take place in Downtown Brenham during Winter of 2024-2025.

This program is supported/sponsored in part by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Ant Street Inn/Main Street House.
